GADGETS: Petzl Tikka
Headlamps are finally part of standard equipment for anyone who wanders the outdoors. Leaving hands free for balance, tools, or handiwork, they are now both bright and durable enough to manage the worst abuse an outdoorsman can dish out. But with the advent of LED (Light-Emitting Diode) technology, they are now also small enough for anyone to carry along. They're also kind enough to batteries that a lamp can be tucked away in a glove compartment or dresser drawer, awaiting a day of need. Read on for an item we believe you should own.

Running Review: 2006 Hyundai Elantra
If there's one thing the North Country treats roughly, it's vehicles. Locals generally answer the challenge with trucks, 4-wheel drive, and the occasional winch; downstate visitors generally opt for big, all-wheel drive SUVs. Both of these choices present good insurance against the elements, but they're both expensive fixes when repairs become necessary, and they're both gas-guzzlers. We're taking a different tack: we've purchased a smaller, more economical car, Hyundai's Elantra GLS. Over the next few years we'll look in on the car, its performance, and its battle with North Country elements. Keep tabs on the stuggle here.
